Bluetooth Pairing and Disconnection Fixes

Bluetooth fails in a small number of predictable ways: a stale pairing record, a device already connected to something else, interference from the 2.4GHz band it shares with Wi-Fi, or a codec negotiation that never completes. These guides work through them in the order that resolves the most cases first, rather than sending you straight to a factory reset.

Bluetooth questions

Why do my Bluetooth headphones keep cutting out?
Usually interference or a body-blocking issue. Bluetooth shares the crowded 2.4GHz band with Wi-Fi and microwaves, and it transmits at very low power — a phone in a back pocket puts your body directly between the transmitter and the headset.
Why will a device not pair even though it is in pairing mode?
Most often it is already connected to another device it remembers, or your phone holds a stale pairing record. Removing the saved device and re-pairing from scratch fixes the majority of these.
Does Bluetooth drain the battery significantly?
Not meaningfully on any modern phone. Bluetooth Low Energy costs a fraction of a percent per hour when idle, and leaving it on avoids repeated reconnection failures that cost more battery than the radio does.

Wi-Fi

Fix Wi-Fi that says connected with no internet, slow speeds despite full bars, and connections that keep dropping — on any device.
