    HEIC is not a problem with your photos — it is a compatibility gap. Apple switched to it in 2017 because it stores the same image in roughly half the space of a JPG, which is a genuine improvement. The difficulty is that the underlying HEVC codec is patent-encumbered, so Windows, many websites and a great deal of older software still cannot read it.

    Converting to JPG trades that efficiency for universal compatibility. Expect the resulting file to be somewhat larger than the HEIC at the same visual quality — that is the format difference, not a fault in the conversion.

    Two things worth knowing. The quality slider defaults to 90%, which preserves the photo faithfully; drop it to 80% if you care more about file size than an exact match. And if you are converting photos to put on a website, choose WebP instead of JPG — it is as widely supported as JPG in current browsers and roughly a third smaller.

    Frequently asked questions

    Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
    No. The HEIC decoder runs in your browser as WebAssembly, so the photos never leave your device. You can disconnect from the internet once the converter has loaded and it still works — which is worth knowing, because photos carry location data and most free online converters upload everything.
    Why can Windows not open HEIC files already?
    HEIC uses the HEVC codec, which is patent-encumbered. Microsoft ships the HEIF extension free but requires a paid HEVC extension for the codec itself, so most Windows PCs cannot open iPhone photos without either paying or converting them.
    Does converting to JPG lose quality?
    Slightly, because JPG is lossy — but at the default 90% setting the difference is not visible. The larger change is that JPG is a less efficient format, so the converted file is often bigger than the HEIC even at the same visual quality.
    Why is my JPG larger than the original HEIC?
    HEIC is roughly twice as efficient as JPG at equivalent quality — that is the reason Apple adopted it. Converting therefore trades file size for compatibility. Lower the quality slider to around 80% if size matters more than a perfect match.
    Can I stop my iPhone producing HEIC in the first place?
    Yes. Go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG. Existing photos stay HEIC, which is what this converter is for.
    Does this work with Live Photos?
    It converts the still image, which is what a Live Photo's HEIC file contains. The short video component is stored separately as a MOV file and is not part of the conversion.
    Is there a file size limit?
    Files up to about 80MB work, which covers any photo an iPhone produces including ProRAW captures.
